In ancient Rome, gladiators were professional fighters who duelled in pairs. The Papo gladiator resembled a hoplomachus, fighting with a dagger or short spear and protecting himself with a helmet and a small round shield. He fought in the arena against the murmillo and sometimes the thracian.
